It's tough to get bicycle facilities added to roads after the fact, but keeping an eye on road projects and getting involved in the planning stages can be much more effective in meeting bicyclists' needs.<br /><br />There is one such opportunity right now in Greenville. Portions of <a href="http://bikegreenville.blogspot.com/2011/06/bike-lanes-on-pelham-and-roper-mountain.html">Pelham and Roper Mountain Roads</a> are scheduled to be resurfaced over the summer, and bike lanes on these roads would be a great step toward connecting the central business district with the suburbs and other parts of the county, allowing residents to safety travel the area by bike. These roads are already part of the <a href="http://www.bikevillebmp.org/">Greenville Bicycle Master Plan</a>, making the resurfacing a good chance to take a step forward towards the city's goals.<br /><br />The proposed bike lanes are not without support. The county's Transportation Planning Manager, the <a href="http://www.greenvillespinners.org/">Greenville Spinners</a> and many employees in the area (and let's not forget the PCC!) are all in favor of adding bike lanes to these roads. Also, the Greenville <a href="http://www.greenvillesc.gov/ParksRec/Trails/forms/CompleteStreetsResolution.pdf">Complete Streets Resolution</a> and SCDOT's <a href="http://www.scdot.org/getting/bikeped/bp_default.shtml">Bicycle Accommodation Policy</a> advocate for roads that new roads and improvement projects should include facilities for bicyclists and pedestrians as well as cars. However, policies alone cannot get the job done.<br /><br />In the city's quest to upgrade its ranking and become South Carolina's second silver-level <a href="http://www.bikeleague.org/programs/bicyclefriendlyamerica/communities/">Bicycle Friendly Community</a>, Greenville needs vocal support to complete its <a href="http://www.greenvilleonline.com/article/20110515/NEWS/305150014/Greenville-bike-plans-proceed-in-low-gear">goals</a> for bicycle infrastructure. Contact your city council representative to show you <a href="http://bikegreenville.blogspot.com/2011/06/city-council-candidates-on-bike-lane.html">support bike lanes </a>and further efforts to make Greenville more bicycle friendly. Through active and respectful participation in the planning process, we can have a real impact on the design of Greenville's roads. The Great Escapehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09389461923301363022noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37087837.post-49720422469729752182011-05-02T13:11:00.000-05:002011-05-02T13:13:21.535-05:00Steve reviews his Garmin 800 and Trek Cronus Pro<h3 class="post-title entry-title"> <a href="http://stevewhitfield.blogspot.com/2011/05/up-paris-mountain-solo.html">Up Paris Mountain</a> </h3> <div class="post-header"> </div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-d3pa9Zj3vHA/Tb3s4FEg-dI/AAAAAAAAAEo/w129KLtGKZg/s1600/ATI+002.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-d3pa9Zj3vHA/Tb3s4FEg-dI/AAAAAAAAAEo/w129KLtGKZg/s320/ATI+002.JPG" border="0" width="320" height="240" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DVnausg7ya8/Tb3tCLQU64I/AAAAAAAAAEs/9Rcri5gI6dI/s1600/ATI+003.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DVnausg7ya8/Tb3tCLQU64I/AAAAAAAAAEs/9Rcri5gI6dI/s320/ATI+003.JPG" border="0" width="320" height="240" /></a></div><span id="goog_491178802"></span><span id="goog_491178803"></span><br /><br /><br /><br />May 1st, was a beautiful Sunday. It was a comfortably cool, clear morning. A great morning to climb with the new bike, as well as put the Garmin Edge 800 cycling G.P.S. and training aid through its paces. So, up Paris mountain it was to be on a 32 mile, 1400 calorie burning ride. Just myself, the Garmin, and the new bike. The Trek Cronus Pro is part of the Gary Fisher Signature line. It can be seen at www.trekbikes.com under the Gary Fisher Collection tab. The bike sports the F.C.C., which stand for Fisher Control Column. It has a 25mm hub cap, which is much larger than the norm. This means shorter bladed spokes, greater strength, and the ability to corner well, and climb like a goat. The climb up Paris Mountain did seem a little easier than on the Madone 5.2, and the decent around the first hairpin turn was amazing. It was like the bike was reading my mind.<br /><br />Those who know me best know that among my many shortcomings is the fact I get lost going to the mailbox. That is particularly sad since my bloody mailbox is screwed next to the front door of our modest condo. The GPS features of the Garmin Edge 800 kept me on course for a 31 mile ride, and got me home without calling my wife in panic. All, the while I measured my distance, total distance, speed, average speed, cadence, heart rate, average heart rate, calories burned, and elevation gain all on one screen. Other measurements I had on a second screen. One may have 10 different ride calculations on 3 screens for a total of 30 ride statistics, including climb and decent graphs. If you are not impressed yet consider this, one can connect to Garmin connect, create a free account after registering their Garmin, then download the entire ride statistics. You can then print it out, share it, save it, and even post the ride to facebook.<br /><br />When you look at your ride you can see what amounts to all the above specs complete with color graphs of cadence, heart rate, it looks like an EKG, the route, and ascents, and descents, as well as other specs. You can even record the route you just did for future rides. If you are a premium user of www.mapmyride.com you can download maps to a micro SD card and follow those routes on your Garmin. The Cronus Pro retails for $3849.99 and the Garmin Edge 800 bundle with heart rate strap, and cadence attachment retails for $650.00 U.S. If that is a little steep for the Garmin Edge 800, and you do not need the GPS features consider the Garmin 500 which is significantly less expensive and offers many of the Edge 800 features.<br /><br />Come see us soon at The Great Escape in Greenville, Anderson, or Spartanburg. Let us fit you and hook you up with the latest technology in cycling.<br /><br />Till next time,<br />SteveThe Great Escapehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09389461923301363022noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37087837.post-65378877999776200752011-04-22T06:51:00.012-05:002011-04-22T07:16:33.490-05:00Trek implements carbon recycling program<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8NX-S8_cUisDz9VSJk0gN4ZureIFozcWdHWcM6ICP7IuHWBvDpEyv16AqXB5unXu2E9_xBBrmEjYlevLz3xFKwV7r9wUOnJRjzt9SkfYzNQ0258G5ht4sKtjr-1DZpcXqR1pk/s1600/Carbon-Recycling.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="cursor:pointer; This winter has led many of us to experience numb toes, numb fingers and lose feeling in a few other parts of our bodies. We are in the home stretch, spring is in sight with the hopes that we can pack away the ear warmers and booties. The morning rides when all you have to do is throw on a few items of clothing are getting closer. Those moments when you try to decide how much you need to put on before getting on your bike will be a thing of the past(and future). I am getting excited just thinking about it! I know it is still just February, but there's already been talk about Mitchell, ORAMM (Off Road Assault on Mount Mitchell) and all the other staple rides. All that being said, we still have a little left in our winter. It's time to start getting out there if you've been hibernating all winter or continue getting out there if you've been suffering in the cold with us all winter. Let's try to focus on making our spring an easier one by getting on our bikes today! The Great Escapehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09389461923301363022noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37087837.post-35093737044661722492011-02-10T08:58:00.002-05:002011-02-10T09:09:27.222-05:00<h1 class="seheading"><div><span>The Great Escape Customer Appreciation Day</span></div></h1> <table border="0"><tbody><tr><td><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwa9sK3G_QMvoJ9HtPSptT__1B826Qhyphenhyphen4jRsg4sdTqqSViChaz7Tg8e8XxAfBQVCXDukkR75bLkj2wF356frf3D5TdVptAzXicQwYFQ0nOwKkow_AaLUxatliiB29B461ZGwfK/s1600/images.jpg"><img style="float: left; margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; cursor: pointer; width: 259px; height: 194px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwa9sK3G_QMvoJ9HtPSptT__1B826Qhyphenhyphen4jRsg4sdTqqSViChaz7Tg8e8XxAfBQVCXDukkR75bLkj2wF356frf3D5TdVptAzXicQwYFQ0nOwKkow_AaLUxatliiB29B461ZGwfK/s320/images.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5572062479150611010" border="0" /></a></td> <td> <p style="margin: 0pt;">This years <span style="color: rgb(128, 0, 0);"><b>Customer Appreciation Day</b></span> will be on<span style="color: rgb(128, 0, 0);"> <span style="color: rgb(128, 0, 0);"><b>Sat. Most of my followers only see my sleek Trek Madone 5.2, but there is so much more to cycling than race bikes and the paceline where I try to hold my line. There is the rewarding experience of commuting by bike, the barhopping downtown, the thrill of riding home in the dark even in the rain. The Trek Soho shown above is what I consider my rainy day bike, and why not? The bike is painted rainy day gray, the full mudguards, sealed roller brakes, American made "Gates Carbon Belt, and belt guard all make for what my boss calls the perfect rainy day bike.<br /><br />This very afternoon I donned my poncho, which I purchased from our neighbor Half Moon Outfitters, my ear muffs, Trek helmet, and new gloves, and headed outside for my commute back home. My coworkers, all of which are hard core cyclist looked on and offered encouragement. "You're bike was made for a day like this" said my boss Ric with a smile. I thought to myself he is right. Weather like this is what separates the real bike commuter from the posers.<br /> I pedaled into the spritz with a smile as they watched me leave. I kept that smile all the way home. The glass of red wine felt sweeter and smoother going down with the paprika chicken dish my wonderful wife prepared for me. I was so glad I rode to work today. I feel so much more alive.<br /> Do yourself a favor. Ditch the car and commute by bike as much as you can. The feeling it gives you is so good for your body and your soul.<br />Thank you my dear friends at "The Great Escape Bicycle shop". Thank you for your encouragement on days like this when it seems so much easier on the surface to take the car, but just beneath the surface is my favorite place to be, because that is where serenity lives. Do yourselves a favor. Experience the bliss. Commute by bike. The Great Escapehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09389461923301363022noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37087837.post-20039170396953137412011-01-24T11:16:00.005-05:002011-01-25T07:31:12.177-05:00TGE Anderson Saturday Morning Ride/sAfter a great and cold ride in Anderson this Saturday morning, a group of us are grimaced over the blood flow moving back into our toes and fingers. We talked about what items of clothing worked really well in the frigid weather and what will not be used next Saturday morning. As I noticed that the ice that formed in my beard is slowly melting away and that the coffee tastes better than ever, we slowly looked at each other and remembered what was discussed a few days before, the idea of heading to Greenville and riding Paris MTN after we finished up the Saturday morning ride. We shrug off the doubt and head out towards Greenville. The idea that is has to be warmer than the 26 degree weather we were just riding in earlier warms our hearts a bit.<br /><br />Once we get to Cleveland Park, we pull the bikes off the cars and start getting dressed. We change clothes to the noise of jokes and the howling of the monkeys from the zoo. We were welcomed to the beginning of the ride with a balmy 32 degrees. Then we are off, heading over to Paris MTN. It has been awhile since I rode Paris MTN and I have to admit, it sounded a bit daunting. While I lived in Greenville, this was something I did a few times a week, but now that I live in the rolling hills of Anderson, it seems like it is a lot steeper and longer than it did before. The three other guys I was riding with are on their maiden voyage. The nervous excitement of the climb was bouncing around in their heads. Once we take the turn onto Altamont, everyone says their last jokes and head up. Wow, I forgot how much painful fun and many great views that climb offers. Also, I forgot how fast the descent can be and how COLD! Once we got back to the cars everyone had smiles on their faces, no matter what pain they felt on the climb earlier. It was laughs and stories at this point. The stories about that dog chase, the wall (the last pitch on Altamont Rd.), the cold and (most importantly)trying to decide where we were going to eat lunch.<br /><br />What a great and cold day. No matter how cold it was during those rides it was great to get on the bike. Whenever you can, bundle up and get on your bike. The Great Escapehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09389461923301363022noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37087837.post-61873561275621627752011-01-20T10:20:00.001-05:002011-01-20T11:14:44.192-05:00Ahh...Carolina Winters! One great reason to live in the Carolinas are the days that we are given in the middle of winter that allow us to ride in shorts and short sleeves. One day we might be bundled up trying to avoid the wind and rain or snow. Then the next day we walk outside to enjoy the sun and 60 degrees. It helps break up to torturous monotony of riding that cursed trainer! Luckily, after positioning myself just right in the crowd, I was able to grab a Top Fuel 9.9 in my size. I jumped on it first thing and rolled over to Fox's tent to get the suspension set up right. I look down and I am taken back by the amount of items across the nice carbon handlebar. It has a lockout switch on each side! At first, my thought is that there are just too many things going on in front of you. I would have to hit the trail to get the verdict though. After some suspension love from Fox, I head out to the trails.<br /><div><br /></div><div>As I am riding out to the trails, I realize that this is going to be my last ride. After looking at my watch, I resolve to take full advantage of this bike and these trails. I want to go fast, catch riders and not see them again. Honestly, I forget about the bike through the first section of trail. I do pick off several people. Carving through singletrack and stomping out of corners, I feel very agile and I am having a blast. </div><div><br /></div><div>I feel like I should take it back a bit. Sometimes when you have a XC specific bike, you have a fast bike, but you miss that forgiveness of having a full suspension bike<b>. </b>It seemed that when I was riding the Top Fuel, I wasn't being penalized for wanting a "race bike". I wan't taking the abuse that my bike should be able to take for me.</div><div><br /></div><div>After coming out of the first section of woods, I look back down at my handlebars. I notice the two lock-outs again. I start playing with the on-off buttons. Basically you have a thumb shifter to engage the lock-out and you use the side of your index finger knuckle to disengage it. It seems very simple, but it would require some time to learn not to let your hands float around your handlebar when your lock-out is engaged. It does make it extremely easy to open your suspension back up. I am a rider who usually doesn't mess with his suspension while riding, but I can see how this set up can be a huge advantage for someone who is looking for every edge.</div><div><br /></div><div>Once I get back into the trails my mind gets back to the task at hand, which is getting through the trails and tracking down anyone I see in front of me. One huge difference I notice between the Fuel EX and the Top Fuel is the quickness. There are a few sections that I have to get around or over and I notice that with the Top Fuel I am quicker through those sections. In paticular there are some off camber roots that I need to get up and over. I lift my front wheel up to place it on top of those roots and the next things I know, my front wheel is over the roots already and the section is already behind me. This bike gets you through the trail fast! I still am a fan of the Fuel EX for an all-around trail bike, but if you are looking for a race rig then this is your bike. It is amazing. If I ever start thinking about MTB racing again, I would get this bike without hesitation. </div>The Great Escapehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09389461923301363022noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37087837.post-5279308611406209202010-09-27T16:54:00.005-05:002010-09-27T18:13:52.983-05:00Trek Speed Concept<img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrDOZFi_h2wVyagUVA92OOkjWhlh3CJbQG_hu5EaGaibduxYAnx7lk0rg8BTDUW7XD-gYjyhEYJ5gmZApaQj3hGgQIF19BaC-VOyjRC-LIMLwpLUCIZpzg3bfhyecdoz3s997Y/s200/painted+bikes+018.jpg" style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5521733484809078226" /><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_y7j_6vKzws4k7xpnCL7q6dfhKG-tj9Et2RxjG1bZvS5rW0tdEdlOPspoh8bpK1rBRl7lnbZ0gLZFp7D08yaQ5hAbJ_0Ofwhle8QKfWscDNgkye_W24hYkfyci7MEBP99Mr-n/s200/painted+bikes+028.jpg" style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5521733488886553394" /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbmfgSxSi9lqdoU3EiMKttm9DB_bjDrvUtSKC_9rugRMlMvxWDCsMSOHSrM_mca-gu3Ugl5Wlo1ZxDFHF9kyQl90hoWXNjFR9-ApYHzL1WTVNf1d1nLZyn1p-0jAkv4OAfpoQC/s1600/painted+bikes+021.jpg"><br /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgl-2M-IRIz35D_aQM9mRUEZ6YeCFzxwML3byN3cqroiP6sHYbcMYbp-If15BJv9KJRwA6z24eQxcaeM1Y3GVNMAmp1zfHX2WyylwzXUh7Ivr5BlIrKyhTSnfMODvkDeDtGht92/s1600/painted+bikes+019.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgl-2M-IRIz35D_aQM9mRUEZ6YeCFzxwML3byN3cqroiP6sHYbcMYbp-If15BJv9KJRwA6z24eQxcaeM1Y3GVNMAmp1zfHX2WyylwzXUh7Ivr5BlIrKyhTSnfMODvkDeDtGht92/s200/painted+bikes+019.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5521733496185162626" /></a><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbmfgSxSi9lqdoU3EiMKttm9DB_bjDrvUtSKC_9rugRMlMvxWDCsMSOHSrM_mca-gu3Ugl5Wlo1ZxDFHF9kyQl90hoWXNjFR9-ApYHzL1WTVNf1d1nLZyn1p-0jAkv4OAfpoQC/s200/painted+bikes+021.jpg" style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5521733503814553634" /><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: medium; ">The Trek Speed Concept bikes are starting to hit the stores. The chance to spin just a little easier than the night before at Donaldson Center, or at least sometimes it is. Tonight some of the usual suspects were called away, so it was that myself, our fearless leader Joe, and our newly adopted friend of "The Great Escape Bicycle Shop" Valerie shared a fun ride. </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: medium;">Our leader Joe shared some valuable riding tips for us. Things such as pedaling through the spin taking pressure of the non pedaling leg and pulling through a full 360 spin. He also pointed out the value of using the small chainring, finding a comfortable gear, and spinning up the hills rather than just powering through by standing. We appreciate you Joe for the knowledge you bring to the rides and share.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: medium;">We took turns pulling our short but happy train along the, mostly country, roads on our approximately 27 mile route. We encountered a combination of nice smooth roads, some not so smooth roads, some serious railroad tracks, and some unleashed dogs that were pretty good sprinters.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: medium;">"So ride leader which way do we turn at the stop sign?" said Joe. "Hmm" I replied. "Ah right?" "No Left" Joe responded with a slight smile. "Wow, the jig is up" I said to myself. My most serious deficit is about to be discovered. My sense of direction is so bad I couldn't find my way out of a paper bag. I mean I sometimes get turned around going to my mailbox and it is nailed to the wall by my door. The test continued and sometimes I got it right, but mostly I got it wrong.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: medium;">I'm in bad need of a good GPS. Fortunately "The Great Escape" is about to get the line of Garmin GPS units. They are already coming in. I'm certainly getting one for my bike. We also have a neat selection of the watch style Garmin units for runners. They can monitor heart rate, time, speed, and you can even race against yourself with them.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: medium;">If you plan to attend our Wednesday evening ride which meets behind "The Great Escape" at 6PM, or the Paris Mountain ride on Saturday mornings at 7am, give us a call the day before at the shop. What a great event to have here in the Upstate. The day started at LaFrance Elementary with a charity ride from there to downtown Anderson. There were two options on the ride. One was a 14 mile ride and the other a 40 mile ride. Once the riders made it downtown they were greeted with water and an option to park their bikes at a bike valet. After dropping their bike off, they could walk to main street to see several events that carried on through the day.<div><br /></div><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-BTJp1xYJdveskB30YGNT-ekiN5WoupS7EGxhUgBD69xlIs5fePaex324SNlAx-XbX515tDWJqMs9mqOoudjG-kaQOErTfBU-BhEpqWUfbpq8QBg3fS2rNEtVrMLAJtw9X_OU/s320/P9040010.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5514739844889747138" /><div>There was a Charity Trike Race held in front of the new court house. There were several contestants and each of them had a chance to raise money for his or her selected charity. The charity that raised the most was Challenge to Conquer with $2375. I heard the last total amount was over $8000! This was a great spectator event and it was great to see so many people behind so many great charities.</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>There was a bike rodeo sponsored by the Safe Kids Coalition of Anderson. The bike rodeo gave the little people a chance to learn some rules of the road, gave them an opportunity to learn how to handle their bike and remember to look for signs, and most importantly, reminded them to remember to wear their helmets. This is the one thing that both little and big people need to remember - always wear your helmet. Also, in midst of all the other raci<span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-size:15.8333px;">ng, there was a kids race. All the kids that were amazed at the speed of the racers now had a chance to show off their skills. After watching these kids race, I think we have some potential in Anderson.</span></div><div><br /></div><div><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 170px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipDG74Id09vKDfLX0KghyphenhyphenH8Se9CPOCWPMnlnSKx-sZhL8o7VEInHH8uXrHnfsxU15g0xwEwRNfVIDuKXg5EAc4ADVPfGwqjfP3Xohtd0CvA-PFosCQWf_Ze-F2d_TtWGV0wgzp/s320/P9040038.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5514739071204381794" /></div><div>The crits were the biggest attraction of the day. These started at 9am and ending around 7pm. We had action going on all day downtown. Whether you were interested in testing your metal against the others out there or just seeing what criterium racing is all about, you had a perfect chance. The end of the day is definitely where all the action was found. There were around 90 pro riders on the start line, and they were from several different countries and several different national pro teams. These guys were fast. I heard several people mention that they were nervous to lean against the rails and see the action up close because the guys were going too fast. It was great to see this all happening in downtown Anderson, and it was a great stepping stone for the third annual Tour de LaFrance next year. </div><div><br /></div><div>If you didn't get an opportunity to see the races, I am sorry you missed out, but there is always next year. I heard amazing numbers during TrekWorld in regards to how popular, and most importantly, how fast this bike is on the road. I heard numbers about how many minutes, yes minutes, were dropped off an Ironman distance bike leg. I heard that since this bike has been around, it has won every bike leg. Each of these facts are super impressive, but all I thought was that it was just another TT bike.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">I am not a "Tri guy" in any way at all. I don't like running, and the only time I will get in the water is if there is a cooler of beer somewhere close. That being said, I do love to ride bikes. That is the part of the "Tri" that I can really get into. I have ridden a few Tri bikes in my past, and I can definitely see that these bikes have a purpose. These bikes are meant to go fast with little effort. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">When I first walked to the Speed Concept area I felt assured that I would not have a bike available for me. As I walked closer to the area, it was as if it was meant to be. People parted and someone rolled up handing in a Speed Concept large enough for me. Once I got my hands on it, the first thing I noticed is the weight of the bike. This bike feels light, especially for a TT bike. It feels like it is under 19 pds. I did get some weights on this bike after riding it (med 9.9 SSL is just a hair over 18pds). Also I noticed the profile. This bike is super thin and it might be, at its widest point, a bit over an inch if you look at the bike from the nose to tail. Not counting the handlebar or saddle, of course. After adjusting a few things, I was off, very awkwardly at first as I dodged all the people running from tent to tent. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Once I navigated my way through the mess of people and actually made it to the road, my mind started noticing the bike. First thing my mind goes to is the fit. I feel small on this bike. I am a bit over 6 foot and around 215, so it is tough for me to feel small on a bike. I notice that I am close to the ground and I am placed into the handlebars. I notice that I am going fast already, even when I am on the bullhorns. At this point I am itching to get into the aerobars to really see what this baby can do on the open road. I slowly and carefully make my way into the aerobars. As I relax into the bars I notice how my legs accelerate and I am having to start to shift quickly for my gearing to keep up with my legs. That is when I notice to the SRAM R2C shifters. These shifters are amazing! No matter which way you shift, the shifter will return to the neutral position. So, when you are in the extreme rear cogs it is still just as easy to shift. I play with the shifters for a bit and then start paying attention to the bike again. As soon as I start trying to focus on the bike, my sight gets set who is in front of me. As soon as I pass one person I focus on another and then another. My legs keep spinning and all I can think is that I want to go faster. Most times in the past I have gone fast on bikes and I feel I come to a level where it is my stopping point. A very few times in the past I feel like a bike is waiting on me to go faster, almost begging me. The Speed Concept is one of those bikes. After riding the Speed Concept for several miles I feel like I let this bike down. It wanted to go faster, but I couldn't oblige. After admitting defeat to myself, I pick my head up and get out of the aerobars. As I am turning around I realize that I have another chance to please this bike on the way back to the Trek facility. After getting off the bike and handing it off to the Trek mechanic I can say that at least one of us was satisfied. I will leave it up to you to decide which one.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">This bike has many new technologies that make it fast. If you are looking for an advantage on the Tri or TT scene, this is the bike for you. Just make sure you can satisfy her appetite for speed. Waterloo is where Trek has its main manufacturing facility. This is where they make all their lovely carbon bikes. Sorry folks, no cameras are allowed in their factory. <div>Upon arriving to Waterloo we are greeted with a sea of bikes to choose from. The biggest problem is trying to decide how to spend the 3 hours you are given. I look to my left to see Gary Fisher Collection Cronus Ultimate, in front of my Top Fuel 9.9 and to my right Speed Concept 9.9(to only mention a few). My heart is pulling me in so many directions at the same time. I imagine this is how I felt as a child when I walked into a toy store. </div><div>I focus on the bike closest to me. I grab a Fuel EX 9.9. I have a Fuel EX at home, but not the carbon. This is a dangerous proposition for me because I am going to be able to see what I am missing. I already think the Fuel EX is one of the best trail bikes out there, but I am curious what carbon will do for this bike. I get on the Fuel and take off. Not really sure where I am heading, but I am getting there in style. After a few turns we get into the woods, but before starting I was sure to thank the guy in front of me for knowing where he was going. The first thing I notice is the are how the roots and rocks are sucked up into the bike. Those things that take your power and momentum when are cutting through the woods dissappear. Now, with my Fuel EX 9 the suspension does a lot of this for me, but I was amazed at how much the carbon takes this bike to the next level. It lets you focus on the next turn, log or whatever deserves your attention. Also, they added an OCLV MTN carbon to the downtube. This is just a tougher carbon and it is build to withstand shots that the downtube can sometime take. They put a "carbon shield" on that part of the downtube as well. Again, to be able to protect that sweet carbon frame.</div><div>The next thing I notice is the ABP(active braking pivot). This is a great innovation that Trek brought to market several years ago, but they added what they call "Convert" to it. What this means is that instead of their traditional 135x5 rear quick release they moved to a 142x12. This brings a stiffer rear end to the bike. I think they said it was 30% stiffer. I don't know about that, but you can feel your rear wheel tracking right where you put it. I felt it in corners when I came in hot and was trying to keep momentum through it. Those times when you are really working the trails with your body weight to get every bit of flow, power and fun out of it the bike helps you get the most out of each trail.</div><div>Long story short...This is a Fantastic Trail Bike! As I said in my blog before, Trek has brought the best or one of the best bikes to market again. If you are looking for a trail bike to fight it out with the trails, your buddies or even a race-this bike is for you. If you can invest more into your bike I would suggest to go carbon. You will not regret it!</div><div><br /></div><div>Remember to park your car and get on your bike!!</div><div><br /></div>The Great Escapehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09389461923301363022noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37087837.post-67843669052503900172010-08-25T09:21:00.004-05:002010-08-25T11:11:26.308-05:00Trek World 2011!!<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjU2dvsRACwfx2vCQuPzzVyC_3F78n9V6X4GfaQN81aEBdl65Nf37fKTRqQKHkmnzsQpiKMRAnRlVRuiIAvqZ2dHKpBzOM45z31U0L27h7dm7Us4V27jCao0-yY6-jBTfZHapBW/s1600/P8090054.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjU2dvsRACwfx2vCQuPzzVyC_3F78n9V6X4GfaQN81aEBdl65Nf37fKTRqQKHkmnzsQpiKMRAnRlVRuiIAvqZ2dHKpBzOM45z31U0L27h7dm7Us4V27jCao0-yY6-jBTfZHapBW/s320/P8090054.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5509353208927260834" /></a>Since Trek World a few weeks ago I have still been going over in my head all the bikes that Trek has to offer. I have told customers in the past that if you are looking for a bike, Trek has one to offer you. Going to Trek World has totally reaffirmed that belief and taken it to another level. Trek has brought their "A game" again in 2011. I am in full belief that Trek is leading the way in so many different areas. I feel confident telling customers that not only does Trek have the bike for you, but it is going to be the best or one of the best out there. <div>I had an opportunity to ride several -best in class- bikes that Trek is bringing to market in 2011. In the next few weeks I will give feedback on each bike that I rode during Trek World. I was excited about each of these bikes and I am looking forward to the chance to tell you about them.</div><div>Remember to keep your car parked and get on your bike!</div><div><br /></div><div>Gary</div><div>The Great Escape</div><div>Anderson, SC</div>The Great Escapehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09389461923301363022noreply@blogger.com0
